Honors english 102
To fulfill my first year English requirement, I took the course Honors English 102. This course was unique because it paired service-learning with the English content covered in class. The course began by reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot and discussing the various connections this book had with the concept of ethics in the rise of technology. From there, the class transitioned into selecting, developing, and researching various topics that related to ethics in the rise of technology. I chose to research genetic engineering for my research paper, which proved to be a more daunting task than I expected. The topic of genetic engineering is much broader than I originally estimated and it contains many subtopics. Eventually, I narrowed the topic down to focus on some of the more controversial aspects of genetic engineering. During my research, I learned a lot about the way that genetic engineering fits into today's scientific world and how the process of genetic engineering will change the way future humans live.
In addition to reading, researching, and writing, I participated in a service-learning project with the Bearcat Buddies program. Even though I had already been volunteering with Bearcat Buddies at Hayes-Porter Elementary, this service-learning project still forced me to push myself further to be a more effective tutor. I visited the school every Friday during the quarter to spend half an hour individually tutoring an eighth grade student, Jamya. Although she was very quiet and timid the first time I met with her, Jamya improved greatly through the course of the quarter and became much more comfortable with the Math topics she was studying. The second portion of my time at Hayes-Porter was spent reading with students from a first grade class. The first graders were very enthusiastic and put forth a lot of effort when I asked them to read portions of the practice book. I really enjoyed volunteering with Bearcat Buddies and I was glad that I could work my service-learning project to fit my existing commitment.
