Leadershape Institute 2015
Following fall semester of my senior year, I chose to attend the LeaderShape Institute, a six day long leadership retreat that inspired me to reflect on my personal values, relationships, and goals, as well as identify and evaluate various leadership qualities that I already exhibit. While I was anxious about attending the institute at first, I quickly settled into the experience once I met and bonded with a small group of individuals that shared a similar background and value system as me. As the week progressed, and I participated in more and more challenging and engaging activities, I became more aware of the values I hold and the differences that exist between people of varying backgrounds and belief systems. Reflecting on my time at the LeaderShape Institute, I am glad for the challenges that it posed because it gave me many opportunities to reflect on my own beliefs and strengthen my personal convictions.
In the second half of the institute, students identified and developed a personal vision for positive change. My vision, which pertained to increasing work-time flexibility, was particularly important to me because it aligned with two of my core values of integrity: meaningful career and family/friendship cultivation. I believe that by increasing workplace flexibility, employees would have the liberty to determine the perfect work-life balance for their lifestyle and, as a result, would be more productive and content. LeaderShape was just the inspiration catalyst for developing my vision – it is now my responsibility to work towards making this vision a reality. In the first stages of implementation, I’ll begin by identifying companies with a flexible work hour business model and observing and researching both the positive and negative outcomes caused by this concept. As time progresses, I hope to see more and more companies within the United States, and one day the world, adopting a more flexible workplace culture that allows employees to determine for themselves when they work.
